GNU Linux Localization

Filed under: Tech articles — woojar @ 4:33 pm

As we all know, you must face the issue of localization while you using Linux, especially you are no-English speaker. Of course, GNU Linux is quite international OS. You can almost change it to any language you like. Here, we emphasize two words. One is Localization and the other is Internationalization. The former is abbreviated to l10n, it means there 10 letters between the L and N; The later is abbreviated to i18n.

Generally, you can edit the file i18n in the directory “/etc/sysconfig/i18n” to display your local language. To Chinese, you can add or modify the following items to display Chinese characters. The prerequisite is that you have installed Chinese font support in your system.

LANG=”zh_CN.GB2312″
LC_ALL=”zh_CN.GB2312″
